The sister of slain businessman Chuwong Sae Tang has appealed to the Thai Department of Corrections to enforce the death penalty for Banyin Tangpakorn, convicted of Chuwong's murder and other heinous crimes. Ms. Wanpen Thanathamsiri expressed concerns that Banyin, a repeat offender with a history of attempted prison escapes, might be pardoned and pose a continued threat to her family and society.
Banyin was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court for the premeditated murder of Chuwong in June and for the kidnapping and murder of a judge's brother in July. He has a total of five criminal convictions. Ms. Wanpen emphasized that while she respects the royal prerogative of pardon, she believes the Department of Corrections should carefully consider Banyin's repeated offenses and dangerous behavior before recommending any leniency.
The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Corrections, Dr. Sompop, clarified the standard procedures for death row inmates, stating that they have 60 days to submit a petition for royal pardon. He confirmed that Banyin has not yet filed such a petition. Dr. Sompop also noted that Ms. Wanpen's plea will not influence the pardon process, which is ultimately a royal decision. He added that the last execution in Thailand occurred in 2018.
Ms. Wanpen recounted her family's nine-year struggle for justice, during which they faced threats and intimidation. She fears for her family's safety if Banyin is ever released and urged the authorities to uphold the Supreme Court's verdict. She emphasized that while pardon is a positive mechanism for reformed prisoners, it should not be granted to those who repeatedly violate the law.
